APC policy programme’s manager invited to high level UN group of experts

NEW YORK, United States -- The United Nations Global Alliance for ICT and Development (UN GAID) has invited APC policy programme’s manager, Willie Currie, to participate in an ad-hoc group of experts on financing ICT for development (ICT4D). Statement from participants in the “Civil Society Workshop on Open Access to ICT infrastructure in Africa”

KIGALI, Rwanda -- A statement by African civil society groups was made in light of the publicised commitments and goals of the Connect Africa Summit taking place in Rwanda, Kigali on 29th and 30th of October 2007. The statement acknowledges that the private sector plays a key role in the deployment of infrastructure in Africa. Its continued investment should be encouraged through the implementation of a stable policy environment that encourages investment as well as protect the public interest. Event on equitable access

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- APC announces a one-day event on equitable access to ICT infrastructure on 10 November 2007 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Why this event? Access brings people together to exchange information, promotes new spaces for social inclusion and is fundamental to development processes in any society. The GRACE research to hold new workshop, launch new website

BERLIN, Germany -- The Gender Research in Africa into ICTs for Empowerment (GRACE) is a research project that APCNews has been covering in the past. CALL FOR RESEARCHERS: SAT-3/WASC Cable Research Project: Country Case

-- APC is currently looking to engage four ICT policy researchers to conduct detailed country studies of the SAT-3/WASC submarine cable in the following countries: Angola, Cameroon, Ghana, and Senegal. The specific context of the research will be on the areas that Open Access (as a concept) seeks to impact - namely access and cost. Research will be conducted on the impact SAT-3/WASC has had on the competitiveness of international and Internet services in each country. Interested researchers should in the first instance submit a copy of their CV and a sample of written work (of no more than 2000 words) to abi@apc.org Please include "SAT-3/WASC Cable Research Project" AND the name of the country you are applying to research on, in the Subject field of your email. UPDATED SITE: APC Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) ICT policy monitor

APC updates groundbreaking "internet rights" charter

STATEMENT: APC condemns imprisonment of pro-democracy bloggers by Egyptian authorities

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- APC condemns the unjust detention of free speech bloggers and journalists in Egypt. Alaa Seif Al-Islam, a seasoned blogger and APC colleague, is one of four Egyptian online diarists being held in detention for criticising the current regime since May 7. In addition, APC has heard disturbing reports about violent actions taken by state security against several of the bloggers who were released from custody last week, only to be subsequently re-arrested. Authorities prevented human rights lawyers from visiting the bloggers who had been beaten and tortured on Thursday May 25. - 06/02/2006 More >>

Kenya's first internet provider joins APC

GOA, India -- Kenya-based African Regional Centre for Computing (ARCC) is the newest member of the Association for Progressive Communications.
